Compositional Work

Dr Eugene Seow writes selectively for projects that align with his artistic, pedagogical, and research interests. His compositional practice is grounded in jazz-informed writing, rhythm-section fluency, hybrid ensemble design, and cross-cultural musical thinking.

His work draws on formal training in jazz composition and professional music at Berklee College of Music, alongside practice-led research in rhythm pedagogy, ensemble fluency, contemporary musicianship, and hybrid performance. Rather than treating composition as a separate portfolio area, he approaches writing and arranging as extensions of his broader work in ensemble learning, musical judgement, and practice-led curriculum design.

Selected project areas include:

Contemporary jazz and improvising ensembles

Hybrid and cross-genre instrumentations

Rhythm-section-centred writing and arranging

Educational and developmental ensemble repertoire

Artist-led collaborations requiring bespoke rhythmic, textural, or cross-cultural frameworks

Arrangements for contemporary, intercultural, and practice-led performance contexts

His compositions and arrangements have been performed by the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, recorded on original albums including Origin Story (2018) and A Blueprint for Tomorrow (2016), and featured across concerts, studio projects, and educational settings. These projects reflect an ongoing interest in rhythmic design, ensemble interaction, improvisational space, and clear communication between score, performer, and rehearsal process.

Eugene’s approach emphasises clarity, performability, and high-level ensemble communication. Materials are prepared with practical rehearsal considerations in mind, including part layout, cueing, rhythmic readability, role clarity, and the needs of mixed or hybrid ensembles.

He undertakes composition and arrangement projects on a selective basis, especially where the work intersects with contemporary performance, hybrid instrumentation, curriculum-linked ensemble development, or practice-led artistic research.
