The Fellowship of the Victoria College of Music (FVCM) is a Level 7 qualification, equivalent to postgraduate level. I am highly honoured to have been awarded the Fellowship of the Victoria College of Music (FVCM) in Composition with Honours. This recognition means a great deal to me, reflecting years of dedication, creativity, and academic effort. Achieving it with honours makes the achievement even more meaningful.

Before pursuing the FVCM in Composition, my highest qualification in composition was a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Composition from Berklee. That degree focused specifically on jazz and is classified as a Level 6 qualification. Although I was confident in my ability to compose more broadly, I had never formally demonstrated that at a higher academic level. Before this, I had not earned an examined fellowship. My highest music diploma qualification was the LTCL diploma in drums, so achieving the FVCM with Honours was a pleasant and somewhat unexpected surprise.

You might wonder how the FVCM fits alongside my Doctor of Music Education (DME). The DME focuses primarily on research and pedagogy, while the FVCM validates my creative and compositional expertise. They are two distinct but equally legitimate fields. Together, they demonstrate that I am both a scholar and a practising musician.

I submitted three major works for the fellowship submission: a big band piece, a four-movement suite, and a jazz orchestra composition featuring strings. I also prepared detailed comprehensive programme notes that explained my creative process and musical intentions. This combination of portfolio and documentation was key to achieving honours.

This fellowship is more than a certificate. It has already led to me advising Victoria College of Music on syllabus development. I am exploring managerial and academic roles related to composition and music theory at a high level. Doors are opening as a result.

Victoria College of Music qualifications, including diplomas and fellowships, are regulated and validated by Logos University International, a recognised awarding body. This partnership guarantees that these awards meet rigorous academic standards and enjoy formal recognition. While Trinity, ABRSM, RSL, and LCM have long been dominant players in the Ofqual landscape, Victoria College of Music is a well-established institution that rightly deserves recognition alongside them.

If you are considering fellowships like this, my advice is simple: research thoroughly, prepare your portfolio meticulously, and connect with industry professionals and successful candidates for guidance. A few targeted coaching sessions can make a significant difference. Stay ready and stay hungry.

For busy working musicians like myself, time management is crucial. Prioritise your commitments carefully and segment your time to avoid burnout. You can push through the inevitable challenges with the right mindset and discipline.

The path to mastery is never easy, but it is always worth it. Don't wait for the perfect moment if you are passionate about composition, education, or music. Start preparing now. Build your credentials, hone your craft, and watch opportunities open.

Your journey is yours alone to shape. Take the leap and make it count.
